Chimney Fire becomes Structure Fire
Mon. Nov 19th 2012
On this date at just a little before 7pm Dutchess 911 dispatched Roosevelt units for a report of a Chimney Fire on Cardinal Road. On arrival of the first units, they found an active chimney fire with extension progressing rapidly into the structure as they investigated and began to open up. Crews were deployed into the structure where they were met with fire in walls and heavy smoke as well as heat on the second floor around the fireplace chase area of the wall. As crews began to open up inside, crews were outside investigating the chimney and progression of the fire which proved to be presenting with a deteriorating condition of the chimney was rapidly occurring. With the chimney rapidly deteriorating and starting to lean into the structure creating a unsafe condition, command ordered a full evacuation and PAR to be taken. After a game plan was created and all personnel accounted for another plan was put into affect where as to keep an eye on the chimney collapsing and safely putting water on the fire till the chimney could be removed. It was at this time that that the alarm assignment of 5 Engines, a Rescue, a Ladder and Ambulance were upgraded to additional 2 Mutual Aid Engines to the scene and coverage into the stations. A tow truck was used to winch off the chimney from the roof after it fell on to it and then fire operations were put into full swing to extinguish the fire and investigate the cause. The cause of the fire was found to be a poorly installed and maintained fireplace and chimney. All units were back in service by midnight, the road was closed during the operations to allow for water shuttle operations to occur. The department was assisted by Hyde Park, Staatsburg and Fairview Fire Departments on scene and manpower and equipment from Pleasant Valley and Hyde Park were on stand-by to cover other calls in the area. The Hyde Park Police assisted with traffic control during the incident, as well as supporting the Fire Police at the call too.
